Hair Porosity vs Product Choices

Does the porosity of your hair influence your product choice? With a tidal wave of products for us curly girls to choose from it certainly should!  Products that work well with your porosity will often yield better styling results and better product choice for your curls.

What is porosity exactly?  Porosity is the level at which the hair absorbs and holds moisture and you can find out your level by doing a simple porosity test like the ‘float test’.

Here’s how:

  • Use room temperature water to fill a glass or bowl.
  • Take a couple of strands of clean hair and put them in the water. Product free hair is important for accurate results.
  • Watch it for 2-4 minutes. If your hair sinks immediately, it has high porosity. If your hair floats it means you have low porosity.

High porosity – means the water was easily absorbed became heavy and sank.

Normal porosity – kind of in the middle and hair will absorb moisture and will not lose it quickly.

Low porosity – means very dry hair.

Moisture, Moisture, Moisture is one of the mantra’s here at Tropic Isle Living as moist hair is key to vibrant hair. Moisture prevents dryness, breakage and split ends.

Managing hair with low porosity.

Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil Shampoo with Shea Butter works as a clarifying shampoo to help prevent build up that low porosity hair is prone to. It also helps to seal moisture.

Add deep conditioning as a part of your hair care regimen because heat allows the cuticle layers to lift exposing the interior strands to optimal moisture.

TIL TIP:

It is best to moisturize when the hair is damp because moisturizing dry hair just does not work – the cuticles are flat.

Managing hair with high porosity

Fortifying, sealing and moisturizing are just a few ways used to treat high porosity hair. Try using our authentic, pure Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil for sealing and locking in moisture. The Tropic Isle Living Jamaican Black Castor Oil Protein Conditioner Mayonnaise Treatment rich in oils like JBCO and avocado oils to strengthen the hair. We recommend using this treatment once a month.
